Charlotte-based high school teacher and AVID Consultant Stacey Bush was looking for a way to reward student accomplishment and increase parent engagement.
“It’s difficult for a teacher to continually reward great behavior because of cost and time. I was looking for a way to accomplish both, all while involving high school parents more in their child’s academic performance.” – Stacy Bush, Honors English Teacher, AVID Consultant, Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology
She implemented a goal-setting solution from SkoolAide to engage both her students and their parents in the child’s academic performance.
How it worked
SkoolAide enabled students to set and track simple goals to track their grades on weekly homework assignments and tests. When those goals were met, the student was rewarded in the classroom with candy. More motivated students or those who were more engaged in using technology used SkoolAide on longer term goals. Other students worked with their parents on longer term goals and incentives like gift cards to their favorite stores or restaurants.
Positive results were apparent within a semester. A random sample of forty SkoolAide users across grades 9-12 showed improvements in both math and English, resulting in an average 12% increase in GPA— an important boost for college-bound students. Students enjoyed working with SkoolAide because it was an engaging digital tool and gave them tangible rewards for their work. “[Students] were engaged in their own progress; it was self-recorded and easy to see,” said Stacey Bush. The parents who were involved also liked the program.
Easy to Implement
Getting started on SkoolAide was easy for Stacey and her students. They registered for the program as a class, and could set their first goals within a few minutes.
“I would recommend SkoolAide to other educators. It is an easy way to have students self monitor, set goals and receive tangible rewards for their work. Parents can easily see the results of students’ work and set their students up for a reward through the system.” – Stacey Bush
